Saltdogs Win Streak Snapped in Loss to Fargo 12-3

(Lincoln, NE) - Fargo-Moorhead fought back in game two to even the series with the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park on Saturday. A six-run first inning game RedHawk starter Mike Peschel (2-0) all the support he would need going 6 1/3 innings and picking up his second win of the year. Saltdogs starter Alex Carbajal (1-1) took the loss going four innings and allowing six earned runs.

The RedHawks batted around in the first inning sending six runs across the plate. Five of the first six RedHawks reached base. Ruben Salazar picked up an RBI on a fly ball to center field and Richard Austin sent two more home with a single. In all 10 batters came to the plate against Carbajal.

In the bottom of the inning, Lincoln was able to get one run back. Cory Harris lead off with a double and came home on the second double of the inning from Bryan Warner. After one inning Fargo had the lead 6-1.

Fargo scored another pair of runs in the fourth inning. Brian Ward hit a one out single and came home after a double from Salazar to extend the RedHawk lead to 8-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Saltdogs started to get back into the game with a first pitch homerun from Cory Harris, his third of the year.

The flood gates opened for Fargo in the seventh inning. Salazar began the inning with a one out single. He came home on an inside the park home run by Eric Kofler. On the play right fielder Bryan Warner was injured when he climbed the wall to try and make the catch. Warner was helped off the field under his own power and was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures.

When play resumed Kelley Gulledge was hit by a pitch and Clyde Williams cleared the bases with the second round tripper of the inning. The RedHawks had a 12-2 lead going to the bottom of the seventh.

Lincoln got another run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Josh Patton hit his second home run of the year to left field.

Lincoln and Fargo split the first two games of their three game series with the rubber match on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 2:05 pm at Haymarket Park.

Saltdogs Win Third Straight

It only took 1 hour and 59 minutes for the Lincoln Saltdogs and the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to decide the first game of their three game series. Brian Rodaway threw the first complete game of the year for the Dogs en route to a 5-1 victory on Friday night at Haymarket Park. With the win, Rodaway improved to 2-0 on the year in front of a crowd of 4,121. Jimmy Escalante went the distance for Fargo in the loss.

Two singles to left field started the third inning for the Saltdogs in a then scoreless contest. A third single from Pichi Balet scored the first run of the game when Albenis Machado came cross from second. The next batter, Bryan Warner, hit a deep ball to left center field scoring Harris from third and giving the Saltdogs a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Lincoln struck again. With one down, Cory Harris launched a shot just inside the foul pole in left field to put the Saltdogs up by three. After Pichi Balet was hit by a pitch, Bryan Warner took a 1-2 pitch over the bullpen in right field for his fourth homer of the year.

The Redhawks scored their only run of the game in the seventh inning when Kelley Gulledge hit his second home run of the year.

For Rodaway, this was his fourth complete game of his career. His more recent complete game came in 2003 when he was pitching for Salem in the Carolina League.

The Redhawks and Saltdogs will return to the diamond on Saturday night for the second game of the series. Alex Carbajal is slated to get the start for Lincoln, while Mike Peschel will take the hill for Fargo-Moorhead.

Saltdogs Win Series with Winnipeg

For the second time in as many series, the Lincoln Saltdogs have closed with a victory. Under some rainy skies the Dogs improved to 5-2 in the South Division after a 7-3 win at Haymarket Park against the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Winnipeg began the final game of their four game series with two runs in the top of the first inning. Rusty McNamara started with a single that landed on the wall in left field and he came home on a round-tripper from Odannis Ayala.

In the bottom of the second, Lincoln showed they could hit the long ball as well. Cary Harris led off the inning with a single. After advancing to second on a pass ball, Harris scored on a Bryan Warner single. Josh Patton finished the scoring in the inning with his first home run of the year just inside the foul pole to right field.

The next four innings were scoreless and going into the sixth inning the score was 3-2 in favor of the Saltdogs.

In the bottom of the inning the Saltdogs scored three runs. Two came off an RBI double from Cory Harris. After six Lincoln led 6-2.

Winnipeg struck back in the seventh inning with a run of their own. Max Poulin walked and scored on a sacrifice fly from Harry Berrios to close the lead to 6-3.

An insurance run came in the bottom of the eighth for Lincoln. With one down, Kevin Sullivan tripled to right field. He came home on another trip from Mike Goss to make the score 7-3.

The Saltdogs are tied for first place in the South Division and continue their seven game home stand on Friday night against the visiting Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks who are 5-1 on the season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Saltdogs Defeat Goldeyes 6-3

With a strong wind blowing out to right field on Wednesday night, the Lincoln Saltdogs took the third game of their four game series with the Winnipeg Goldeyes 6 to 3 at Haymarket Park. Mike Kesten picked up his first win of the year in his second start allowing three runs in six innings of work. Jarod Hoerman picked up the save, striking out two in the ninth. The loss went to Roger Luque, the starter for Winnipeg who allowed six runs on 10 hits.

Harry Berrios began the scoring when he took a 3-2 pitch from Kesten over the wall in right field.

It took three innings for the Saltdogs to score their first run. Catcher Kevin Sullivan took the first pitch from Luque deep to left tying the score at 1-1. Mike Goss followed with a single and scored on a line drive double to left field from Cory Harris giving the Saltdogs a 2-1 lead.

Lincoln scored again in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kevin Grijak doubled to right to begin the inning. A pair of singles from Kevin Sullivan and Mike Goss brought across the next run. Albenis Machado also picked up an RBI in the inning with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-1.

In the top of the fifth inning Winnipeg tried to start a comeback. Carlos Santana walked to begin the inning, but was thrown out trying to steal second. With one on base, Odannis Ayala hit a grounder to Kesten on the mound, but his throw went into center field allowing Jorge Moreno to advance to third. Both Ayala and Moreno scored on consecutive singles from Harry Berrios and Donnie Ross. Winnipeg trailed by only two runs 5-3.

The bottom half of the inning saw Pichi Balet reach on a single and he scored an insurance run on the second double of the game from Kevin Grijak.

The Saltdogs look to win their second series of the year on Thursday night as they wrap up the four game series with Winnipeg. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m. at Haymarket Park.

Lincoln Loses to Winnipeg

For Immediate Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes picked up their first win of the season with a 6-4 victory over the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park on Tuesday. A crowd of 3, 525 saw a strong performance from Winnipeg starter Alex Perez (1-0) who went eight strong innings allowing four runs and striking out five. Lincoln Saltdogs starter Hideki Nagasaki took the loss (0-1). Goldeyes releiver Carlos Torres picked up the save (1).

Both teams began the second game of the four game series with a pair of walks. Winnipeg was unable to plate a run, but the Saltdogs were able to score a pair off Perez. Kevin Grijak got his seventh RBI of the year with a sharp single past a diving Rusty McNamara at second base. Josh Patton followed a sacrifice fly to left field plating Brian Warner.

Another run crossed the plate for Lincoln in the bottom of the second. Corey Harris walked and came around to third after an errant pick off attempt from Goldeye pitcher Alex Perez. Harris came home after Perez threw a wild pitch to the backstop making the score 3-0 Saltdogs.

Winnipeg filled the bases in the top of the third with back-to-back singles and a walk. Donnie Ross lined a double into right-center field scoring two. Later in the inning McNamara took a 1-2 pitch off Nagasaka into the same spot as Ross giving Winnipeg their first lead in the series 4-3.

The Goldeyes picked up an insurance run in the sixth inning. Max Poulin reached on an error to right field and scored on a wild pitch from Nagasaka.

In the bottom of the inning the Saltdogs cut the Winnipeg lead back to one. Josh Patton led off with a double and scored on a ground ball. After six the Goldeyes led 5-4.

Another run crossed for Winnipeg in the ninth inning. Two singles began the inning and Donnie Ross drove in Jorge Moreno from third for a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.

Saltdogs Take Home Opener

For the first time in franchise history, the Lincoln Saltdogs scored more than 10 runs in four straight games. Following the 40 runs scored in three games against Sioux Falls, the Saltdogs scored 11 to win their second straight game, 11-6 over the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Alex Carbajal started the game for Lincoln and picked up his first win of the year. The loss went to Adam Gautreau who went 3.2 innings allowing six runs on seven hits.

The Saltdogs carried the momentum from the previous series into their home opener at Haymarket Park with 4,443 in attendance. In the bottom of the first inning after Corey Harris reached on an error and right-fielder Bryan Warner drove Harris home with his second home run of the year off Gautreau. The blast just cleared the fence in right-center field giving Lincoln an early 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, Warner made it two for two with his second home run. He took a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right field and out of Haymarket Park. Josh Patton continued the inning with a double to left-center field. He moved over to third on a ground out and scored on an error.

Harry Berrios answered for Winnipeg in the top of the fourth with a home run of his own to left-center field, the deepest part of Haymarket Park. The lead was cut to 4-1.

In the top of the fifth inning Berrios had an answer for Warner's second home run with his own double dip. Berrios took an 0-2 pitch from Carbajal deep to left center field driving in two runs and cutting the lead to 6-3.

Winnipeg cut deeper into the Saltdogs' lead in the top of the seventh with the fifth home run of the game. Odannis Ayala hit his second home run of the year making the score 6-4 Lincoln.

The night of home runs continued in the top of the eighth inning with Goldeye first baseman Donnie Ross taking Saltdog pitcher Fernando De Aza out of the park to right field. The fourth home run of the game for Winnipeg shrunk the Lincoln lead to 6-5.

In the bottom of the eight, Saltdogs' bats exploded for five runs on six hits. Lincoln sent nine batters to the plate in the inning. Kevin Grijak picked up two of his four RBIs on the day with a two out double to finish the scoring for Lincoln.

The Saltdogs return to action on Tuesday night for the second game of the series against Winnipeg.

Saltdogs Announce Starter for Openning Weekend

Left-handed Pitcher Michael Kesten has been named the Saltdogs starter for Friday night's opening game with the Sioux Falls Canaries in Sioux Falls, SD. "It's an honor to take the mound to start the season," Kesten said. "I feel comfortable and ready to get out there and win with this great team we have."

Kesten, 6'3" and 225 pounds, is a Bellflower, California native. His career totals in six seasons of professional baseball include a record of 16-23 with an ERA of 3.87. He has 288 strike-outs and 161 walks in 297 1/3 innings of pitching. Kesten was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Seattle Mariners in 1999.

Friday's game is set for 7:05 pm at Sioux Falls Stadium. Saltdogs radio broadcasts will begin a half hour before the start of each game. Len Clark and John Baylor will bring the action to the Lincoln area on 1240 am KFOR.

Saltdogs shutout T-Bones in Exhibition Finale

The Lincoln Saltdogs finished a perfect exhibition season with a 9-0 victory over the Kansas City T-Bones on Tuesday in Fremont. Eight pitchers took the hill for Lincoln and they combined to allow only five hits in the contest. Gary Hogan started the game and went two strong innings allowing only a walk in the two frames.

Again the Saltdogs began the game with runs in the first inning. Two singles in a row from Cory Harris and Pichi Balet put runners on the corners with no one down. Brian Warner grounded out to Michael Brown at second after the ball bounced off Ray Brown at first, but Harris was able to score from third. After a wild pitch from Kansas City pitcher Jon McDonald moved Balet to third, Kevin Grijack hit an RBI single driving home Balet.

Three more runs crossed the plate in the third inning for the Dogs. Albenis Machado started the scoring for the Saltdogs with a one out double. Balet followed a Harris walk with an RBI double. Warner and Grijack also picked up RBIs in the inning.

A combination of four Saltdog pitchers took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before designated hitter Eddie Pearson broke it up with a single back up the middle against Humberto Cardenas with one out.

Harris scored three times for Lincoln while picking up a pair of hits in the game at Moeller Field. Machado also crossed the plate three times.

The Saltdogs plated 51 runs over their four exhibition games and only allowed 12. They look to carry their hot bats in the regular season opener against Sioux Falls on the 20th. The home opener is May 23 against Winnipeg with the first pitch at 7:05 pm.

Saltdogs Defeat T-Bones in Exhibition Game

In all 12 pitchers saw time on the mound in the exhibition match up between the Lincoln Saltdogs and the Kansas City T-Bones. But the story of the game was the Saltdogs' hitting as Lincoln won 17-3.

The Saltdogs opened scoring early in the contest. With one down first baseman Pichi Balet lined a 0-1 pitch over the wall in left center off T-Bone pitcher Caleb Balbuena for a home run and the first score of the game.

In the second inning, Lincoln plated another run. After back-to-back singles from Mike Goss and J.D. Foust the Dogs had runners on first and third with one down. Goss scored on a pass ball to extend the Saltdogs' lead to two.

Kansas City struck back in the top of the third. Ryan Freiburger hit a one out single and the T-Bones loaded the bases with a hit batter and an error. Ray Brown struck out looking, but Kansas City scored off a wild pitch from left-hander Alex Carbajal.

Jake Whitesides began the fourth inning with a walk from Kansas City pitcher John Howerton. A double from Kevin Sullivan put runners on second and third before Mike Goss drove in one run and J. D. Foust followed with a 2 RBI double. In the inning the Saltdogs sent 14 batters to the plate, scoring 11 runs on seven hits.

The T-Bones were able to plate another run in the sixth inning when first baseman Ray Brown led off with a single. Eddie Pearson followed with a single of his own and Brown was able to score on a groundball from Cody Nowlin.

Lincoln scored a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh innings for the exhibition victory.

The Saltdogs are now 2-0 in exhibition play and they will travel to Kansas City on Sunday to face the T-Bones at Community America Ballpark.

Saltdogs Add Pitcher

Saltdogs Add Pitcher
Hoerman Pitched in AAA Last Season

(Lincoln, NE) – Right-handed Pitcher Jared Hoerman (LS-5) has signed with the Lincoln Saltdogs.

Hoerman, 6’ 4” and 210 pounds, appeared in 39 games for the Rainiers after beginning the season with San Antonio of the Texas League. At Tacoma, Hoerman was 5-1 with a 4.91 ERA. In 62 1/3 innings pitched, he struck out 34 while walking 40. In 2003, Hoerman helped lead the San Antonio Missions to the Texas League title and set a club record for saves in a season with 36.

A native of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Hoerman played college baseball for the Oklahoma Sooners. He signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Seattle Mariners in 1999.

The 2005 season will mark Hoerman’s seventh year of professional baseball. He has a career record of 25-18 with a 3.19 ERA and 77 career saves.

Exhibition Games Canceled

The Lincoln Saltdogs exhibition game against the Sioux City Explorers has been canceled due to inclement weather. The next scheduled exhibition game will be held Saturday afternoon against the Kansas City T-Bones. The Saltdogs travel on Sunday to face the T-Bones in Kansas City, before rounding out the exhibition schedule on Tuesday night against the T-Bones in Fremont, NE.

Exhibition Season Begins Today

The Lincoln Saltdogs open the 2005 Exhibition Schedule tonight, on the road in Sloan, IA, to face the Sioux City Explorers. Sioux City (1-0) defeated Sioux Falls in Yankton, SD yesterday 10-6.

The Saltdogs will face Sioux City on Thursday night in Columbus, NE, before returning to Haymarket Park on Saturday for a game with the Kansas City T-Bones. The Saltdogs travel on Sunday to face the T-Bones in Kansas City, before rounding out the exhibition schedule on Tuesday night against the T-Bones in Fremont, NE.

The 30-minute program, hosted by Larry Punteney, will give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the Lincoln Saltdogs and its players. “The Dugout Show will be more than just a game-by-game recap,” stated Saltdogs Marketing Director Bret Beer. “The Show will give our fans a true account and all access to what Lincoln Saltdogs baseball is all about.” The Show will air on Saturdays at 11:00 am and at 5:30 pm on Sundays.

Right-Handed Reliever Signs with Lincoln

Right-handed Pitcher Tyler Jacobson (Rookie) has signed with the Lincoln Saltdogs. Jacobson spent the 2004 season with Oneonta (Class-A Short Season) of the New York-Penn League. With the Oneonta Tigers, Jacobson went 1-0 with a 3.10 ERA in 19 game appearances, all in relief, striking out 17 in 29 innings pitched.

Jacobson, 6' 2" 205 lbs., will celebrate his 22nd birthday on May 5th. The Santa Clara, CA native was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 19th round of last year's draft and assigned to Oneonta.

The Saltdogs exhibition schedule begins May 11th, as the Saltdogs travel to Sioux City to face the Explorers; May 12th the Saltdogs will play Sioux City in Columbus, NE; May 14th the Saltdogs host the Kansas City T-Bones, then will close out the exhibiton season on the road at Kansas City on May 15th.
