MIKE BUSCH APPOINTED AS MANAGER OF CALGARY VIPERS

The Calgary Vipers announced the appointment of Mike Busch as the team's first manager on Wednesday.

The Vipers join the Edmonton Cracker-Cats as new teams in the Northern League for the 2005 season, which opens on Friday, May 20.

Busch has spent the last three seasons as the hitting coach for the Lincoln Saltdogs. He also played in the Northern League with Fargo-Moorhead and Sioux Falls, hitting 19 homers with the Canaries in 2000.

After earning all-American honors in both football and basketball at Iowa State University, Busch was selected in the 4th round of the June 1990 amateur draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He played in the majors with the Dodgers for parts of 1995 and 1996, hitting seven homers in 100 career big league at bats.

Busch was also a tenth round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a tight end in 1990 but chose to play baseball.

Calgary also announced the appointment of Steve Maddock as the team's pitching coach. Maddock joins the Vipers after managing Windy City in the Frontier league in 2004.

The Vipers were purchased by Manitoba businessman Jeff Gidney on February 11. The team opens its first season on Friday, May 20 in Sioux City.

The Saltdogs will play Calgary August 1st-4th in Calgary.
